Bahá’u’lláh’s teachings offer a beacon of light to a dark and troubled world. He identified the spiritual principles on which humanity may, with divine assistance, establish lasting peace:
Independent Investigation of Truth
Elimination of Prejudice of Every Kind
One Essential Foundation for All Religions
Religion Should Cause Love, Affection, and Joy
The Harmony of Science and Religion
A Universal Auxiliary Language
Universal Compulsory Education
Establishing a World Parliament
The Abolition of the Extremes of Wealth and Poverty
The Non-Involvement of Religion With Politics
Human Rights for All
“Religion bestoweth upon man the most precious of all gifts.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
Bahá’ís believe in One Eternal, All-Knowing, and All-Loving Creator who is the Source of all existence. God is beyond human comprehension, exalted above every limitation. He has revealed Himself and His Will through a series of Divine Messengers, or “Manifestations of God.” What we know about the unknowable God has been taught to us by these successive Founders of the world’s religions whose teachings nurture the soul, promote unity, and advance civilization.
The relationship between God and humanity is one of profound love. God created human beings out of love and has continually guided them through His Messengers, who reveal teachings suited to the needs of each age. Since that which has been created cannot understand its Creator, no matter how learned or knowledgeable we are, we will always be unable to understand the nature of His Supreme Being.
The reason behind our creation then, as told by Baha’u’llah, is His Love. He says:
“O Son of Man! I loved thy creation, hence I created thee. Wherefore do thou love Me, that I may name thy name and fill thy soul with the spirit of life”
The true purpose of our lives is to know and worship God, and to draw ever closer to His presence. This nearness can only be attained by treading the path of service to humanity—a path through which the divine qualities placed within our souls find expression and are gradually perfected. In dedicating ourselves to the betterment of others, we fulfill the purpose for which we were created and reflect, in our lives, the love and attributes of our Creator.
Bahá’ís believe that all people belong to one human family, created by one loving God. Humanity, in all its diversity, is a single people sharing a common destiny. Differences of race, nationality, culture, or religion do not divide the human race in its essence; rather, they enrich the collective life of humankind. The recognition of this fundamental oneness is at the heart of the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh, who proclaimed that,
“The earth is but one country, and mankind its citizens.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
The oneness of humanity is both a spiritual truth and a practical principle guiding the progress of civilization. It requires that every form of prejudice—whether racial, religious, national, or social—be abolished, and that the equality of women and men be fully realized. Bahá’ís understand that unity is not uniformity; it calls for the harmonious integration of the world’s peoples, cultures, and perspectives in a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.
Realizing this vision of oneness is a collective endeavor. It begins with the transformation of individual hearts and extends to the building of communities founded on justice, love, and service. Through spiritual education, consultation, and community action, Bahá’ís work alongside others to foster environments where all people can contribute to the advancement of society.
The principle of the oneness of humanity points toward a future in which the barriers that divide peoples are replaced by bonds of fellowship and shared purpose. Bahá’ís believe that this emerging world civilization—rooted in unity and guided by divine principles—will enable humanity to fulfill its noblest potential and to reflect more fully the beauty and oneness of its Creator.
“Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
“This is the changeless Faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
Central to the teachings of the Bahá’í Faith is the principle of progressive Revelation, which affirms that all the world’s great religions originate from one divine Source and represent successive chapters in a single, unfolding religion of God.
Bahá’ís believe that throughout history, the one true God has revealed His will to humanity through a series of Divine Educators—among them Abraham, Krishna, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Muḥammad, and most recently, Bahá’u’lláh. Each of these Manifestations of God has been the bearer of a message perfectly suited to the capacity and conditions of the age in which They appeared.
Though Their social teachings have differed according to the requirements of the time, the spiritual truths They have proclaimed are identical, reflecting the same eternal reality and purpose: to guide humanity toward spiritual maturity, moral refinement, and unity. Thus, the world’s major religions are not separate or competing systems, but successive stages in the evolution of one divine Faith revealed progressively by God.
In this age, Bahá’u’lláh has renewed the timeless spiritual truths of the past and revealed teachings that address the needs of a rapidly evolving world.
“There can be no doubt whatever that the peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
The Bahá’í Faith teaches that the purpose of human life is twofold: the development of the individual’s spiritual capacities and the advancement of human society. This concept, often referred to as humanity’s twofold moral purpose, lies at the heart of Bahá’í belief and action. Each person is seen as a noble being, created by God with immense potential. The purpose of life, therefore, is to cultivate these latent virtues—such as love, justice, compassion, and humility—and to apply them in service to the betterment of the world.
Human existence is not a random occurrence, but a deliberate act of divine will. The Bahá’í Writings affirm that every soul has been created to know and to love God, and to contribute to the progress of civilization. Through prayer, reflection, and service, individuals refine their spiritual nature while helping to build a just and unified society. The transformation of one’s character and the transformation of society are thus inseparable aspects of one divine process.
“Having created the world and all that liveth and moveth therein, He, through the direct operation of His unconstrained and sovereign Will, chose to confer upon man the unique distinction and capacity to know Him and to love Him—a capacity that must needs be regarded as the generating impulse and the primary purpose underlying the whole of creation.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
The Bahá’í teachings emphasize that true spiritual growth is expressed through service to others. Personal faith finds its highest expression in deeds that uplift and unite. As individuals strive to purify their hearts and acquire spiritual qualities, they are also called upon to engage in the constructive processes of social transformation, working toward justice, equity, and the oneness of humankind.
“The betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct.”
— Bahá’u’lláh
awareness of the friends, as they work to change themselves inwardly, build unity among people, collaborate with others in the field of service, and help communities take charge of their own spiritual, social, and economic progress. Through these efforts, they contribute to the betterment of the world.
Therefore, Bahá’ís, along with their like-minded friends, are engaged in creating communities dedicated to nurturing hope for humanity’s future, encouraging meaningful action, and recognizing the efforts of all those around the world who work to promote unity and reduce human suffering. They are engaged in a community-building process that strives to cultivate spiritual principles that are translated into action.
